If you’re a regular reader of the Ultimate Technologies Group blog page, you know that the Microsoft HoloLens 2 virtual reality headset intrigues us.
Virtual reality is continuing to grow and use cases are becoming more versatile, allowing this kind of technology to find a welcoming home inside an office or hybrid workspace.
But, as technology improves, newer, higher-performing devices are created. Even though Microsoft has poured a ton of research and development into the HoloLens 2, it’s starting to look like something brand-new is needed.

An Uncertain Future
In the last few months, things have been looking uncertain for the future of HoloLens.
A few Microsoft sources stated that things became a little chaotic after the HoloLens leader resigned. There are also questions regarding future software and hardware for new HoloLens projects.
Both HoloLens headsets were so far ahead of their competition and lead the augmented reality industry for the longest time. In recent months, we have seen the introduction of the Metaverse, and it has been growing in popularity, but this growth means that the HoloLens needed to stay relevant.
Microsoft has since released some statements regarding the future of HoloLens. Scott Evans, the Vice President of Mixed Reality at Microsoft, made a promise to Microsoft customers that new devices will be coming out once the right time.
The HoloLens 2 is already so meaningful for so many job positions around the world, so if the tech company is going to take it one step further, they stressed that the HoloLens update has to be more meaningful than before.
What Are They Waiting For?
The reasons that Microsoft has for waiting for a new HoloLens device are rather simple. Everyone has experienced some kind of technological update that they felt was underwhelming, and Microsoft is trying to stay as far away as it can from this sort of thing.
The tech company doesn’t want to release an update that only gives the user 10% better capabilities. This would lead to Microsoft customers feeling cheated for waiting so long for a new virtual reality tool.
Furthermore, the HoloLens 2 continues to make a name for itself as more jobs and organizations incorporate it into their processes, so there’s no need for a successor quite yet.
The Microsoft Mixed Reality team also hasn’t heard too many customers asking for new HoloLens updates, which is yet another reason why they are deciding to wait for a new release.
As of last week, the Microsoft Mixed Reality Team said they are still working on a solid design for a meaningful update. If the successor device is to succeed, it also needs to have a great return on investment.
However, they also mentioned that they are focusing on improving the displays, tracking, sensors, and battery life for the next HoloLens.
With all of these things taken into consideration, it’s clear that Microsoft is looking to produce more HoloLens products down the road. Although we probably won’t see anything new in the coming year, that doesn’t mean that R&D is over.
Once the hardware has improved in a few more years, then we’ll be in a better position to see what the Microsoft team has in store for us.
For now, you can find yourself a HoloLens headset in the $3000-4000 range.
